Get your hexagonal wrenches at the ready to build Billy bookcases and Hemnes coffee tables. Here comes Ikea. The Swedish retailer announced plans for a 351,000-square-foot store going in at Sunset Road and Durango Drive and is expected to open in summer 2016. Expect 1,300 parking spaces on 26 acres.
The two-story store will have a path guiding customers through the store and 50 display areas, a marketplace with accessories, three designed rooms, a Swedish food market and the bistro with hot dogs, cinnamon buns and yes, Swedish meatballs at a 450-seat restaurant.
The store known for its build-it-yourself furnishings and accessories plans to employ 300. Ikea carries 10,000 items, and a third can be found in the Ikea catalog, the most widely distributed catalog in the world.
Ikea estimates it has already has 100,000 customers in the Vegas area.
Ikea is one of the most long-awaited furniture stores to come to Las Vegas. Right now, the closest Ikea stores are in Covina, Calif., Tempe, Ariz., and Draper, Utah. Ikea has 38 stores nationwide.
The store plans to break ground next spring.
