Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Racked Vegas editor Susan Stapleton: Every time I fly out of Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport, I try to get there a little early and leave a little extra luggage room so that I can shop at Apricot Lane. I always seem to buy minimalist outfits there. On my last trip, I found these Yellow Box Christie boots with a side zipper and a buckle. The silver on the toe and the heel give them a timeless look, and heck, they go with everything. While Apricot Lane doesn't have its own website for shopping online, you can find them at Zappos.com, another Vegas-based company.
Racked NY Associate Editor Laura Gurfein: If the polar vortex made me realize anything—besides that humans really missed the boat on this whole hibernation thing—it's that head coverings are a New York City must in chilly months. Currently, the only one I own that doesn't have a sports team logo on it is my mom's forest green knit beret that she used to wear while running. Not very fashion-forward.
So now I'm really coveting a knit turban headband like this one from ASOS. Use it both for warmth and as an excuse not to do your hair—just spray on some texturizer and you're good to go. Since it comes in one of my favorite colors—red wine—there's a good chance I'd leave it on all day.
Racked National columnist Frank Gargione: It's January, so it's far too cold for your favorite checkerboard Vans. But sometimes you need a little checkerboard. And why not? Checkerboard is graphic, it's youthful, and it can add a little whimsy or edge (it depends, you do you) to just about any outfit.
Enter this mid-weight wool scarf by YMC You Must Create. It's almost six feet long—I love a tall-ass scarf. It's fashioned from merino, which will keep you warm without totally stifling you and is generally the most durable of the softer, finer wools (take that, cashmere!) And, best of all, it's a mere $48 right now at the Corner—marked down from $120. Go with the classic black and white or try it in a rich winter red. I might get both.
Racked NY Menswear Specialist Mickey Sery: When camouflage is in, it's everywhere. Then the trend becomes too saturated and quickly dies out—until it pops up again for another fast and furious cycle. This makes shopping for camo tough, because inevitably you won't get much wear out of your investments. One solution: This $29 accessory. The Hunter's Zip-Top Tote is a durable, water-resistant, tough-as-nails bag with a zippered top to keep your goods free of dirt and wandering eyes. Available in two larger sizes with the maximum price at $39, it's a good way to stay on trend without breaking the bank.
Racked SF editor Kristen Philipkoski: I refuse to spend time on my hair. It's long, I wash it as infrequently as possible and I never blow it dry (I leave that to others, and only on very special occasions). So I need to use products that cooperate with my hands-off approach. Kevin Murphy's Motion Lotion has become a fast favorite. A small dab smoothed through to the ends defines my waves so they're not frizzy, and it's not heavy, so I don't regret applying it on day three of no-washing. My hair feels baby soft, but the shape stays magically intact. Plus, it smells divine.
